Autism Research Information

Autism research is in a drastic state of lack of needed funding. There are an estimated one in about every 166 children that are diagnosed with autism according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Most individuals are not aware of this statistic. It’s alarming to hear about this huge rate of children affected by autism. Due to the deficiency in public information on autism, there is a lack of adequate funds and research on autism.

This is ample reason for concern among parents of children with autism. The primary concern is enough research on the treatment and cure of children with autism is severely lacking. The amount of money being applied to research on autism is less than one percent of the National Health Budget. It’s simply not enough.

The primary emphasis of research on autism is trying to determine the cause of the disease. A potential cure for autism can only be found if the cause is identified. This will take time and money. Hence the need for more research funds.

At present, autism research is focused on studying toddlers (18 months to 24 months of age) with autism. Because toddlers are typically unable to speak well due to their young age, computers give the autistic toddlers non-verbal tests. The purpose of these tests is to measure and determine their ability to absorb the computer information. This enables the researchers to study how the autistic children develop during the crucial formative years.

We are not even close to finding a cure for autism. Without adequate funding the necessary research will not be performed to determine the cause of autism. The cure depends on the cause. We need to wake up the nation and the world to put a higher priority on the need for more and continued research on finding the cause and cure for autism.
